Approach

Researching for new competition and I found an article in nymag that talked about us briefly. Here’s the quote:
“I hear this over and over. “I’m not a big believer in ideas,” says Panagiotis Ipeirotis, a professor at the Stern School of Business at New York University who’s also a programmer. “I believe in execution much more than the idea.” “It’s one thing to have a great idea,” says Dan Thompson. “It’s another to be an engineer and to have a great idea.” For example, Thompson was recently working on an app for the iPhone called Recollect, which would use Bluetooth to help people find stuff they tend to lose, like their keys. Thompson wasn’t the first to have the idea—Phone Halo and Cobra Tag already exist. The difference, Thompson says, is he’ll do it better. ”

lulz.

NFC the future? Not now.

Notice how only 1 of the above phones has NFC however all the phones have Bluetooth.  For a wireless standard to be the future, ubiquity must be obtained.

GWTP + RequestFactory + Objectify + App Engine

Working with gwtp requestfactory and objectify seems that it would be easy to get up and going. But it is a bitch! Not because anything is difficult to do or hard to understand, but the documentation is ALL OVER THE INTERNET!! Below is a collection of resources that I used to get up and going:

  • http://code.google.com/p/gwt-platform/  -gwt main site
  • http://code.google.com/p/gwtgae2011/ -gwtp+appengine+objectify+requestfactory  this is the only complete example i found
  • http://code.google.com/appengine/ app engine main site
  • http://www.google.com/events/io/2011/sessions/highly-productive-gwt-rapid-development-with-app-engine-objectify-requestfactory-and-gwt-platform.html – Google io 2011 talk on objectify-rf-gwtp.  The deck is the best
  • http://turbomanage.wordpress.com/2011/03/25/using-gwt-requestfactory-with-objectify/ David Chandler’s blog with an example of rf+objectify
  • http://code.google.com/webtoolkit/doc/latest/DevGuideRequestFactory.html request factory getting started guide
  • http://www.hibernate.org/subprojects/validator.html hibernator validator
  • REMEMBER TO ADD THE FOLLOWING TO YOUR BUILD PATH!!!
  • requestfactory-apt.jar
  • validation-api-1.0.0.GA-sources.jar
  • all hibernate classes
  • http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6145498/problem-with-configuring-servletmodule-with-guice-injecting-gwt-requestfactory useful entry
  • http://googlewebtoolkit.blogspot.com/2011/09/working-with-maven-and-requestfactory.html This is a total Gotcha that after you know about it you are stoked.  But seriously!  Why is it not in the main guide and I have to put all this crazy bs to my build path!

Feel free to comment to add any other useful links to getting up and going

Surf Check Android App

I’ve been having lots of fun with Android lately and put together a lil tool for myself, Surf Check. This app is simple and meant to be so. Simply open the app and you can easily browse the latest cdip images. Incredibly useful. Incredibly simple. Here’s the link to the app on the market.

Let me know your thoughts.

Note:  I do know the ui sucks.  That’s why I’m calling it version 0.1.
