Bluetooth All Hands Meeting: I can’t pair my…

We’ve all had trouble pairing our headsets and Bluetooth devices together. I have never been able to use the Bluetooth in my Thinkpad computer because the initial set up seems incredibly daunting…and I’m a member of the Bluetooth organization. Why is this so hard?

The problem is rooted in the multiple unique implementations of Bluetooth at the Operating Systems level. What does that mean?

Currently each manufacturer develops their own unique implementation of Bluetooth. The software they write and their communication with the Bluetooth radio is different every time. The Bluetooth SIG doesn’t interact with manufacturers in software and there are small holes in the Bluetooth technical specification. These holes are interpreted in multiple ways and can cause problems in interoperability.

The problem can actually be easily fixed, however there is a political argument on how much the Bluetooth organization is able to and should put requirements on handset and device manufacturers in the upper software layers. There are also no requirements on what functionalities a Bluetooth phone must do in order for the phone to be called, “Bluetooth enabled”. This is highly prevalent in closed systems such as the iPhone that directly challenges the interoperability requirements of the Bluetooth SIG.

My opinion is that the Bluetooth SIG needs to have software functionality requirements on device manufacturers in order to guarantee interoperability, easy pairing, and more Bluetooth enabled applications.

Too Much Talent

The constant problem that I find when interviewing people is not talent. There is more available talent today than ever before. There used to be no talent. Finding a college grad was rare. A masters student was a find. A doctorate was unheard of. Now education has been commoditized. Everyone has a degree. Even the flunkees of High School are able to get 4 year university degrees through community colleges (which is a good thing. I was a High School flunkee).

So how can we separate ourselves from the rest of the pack? I see most people screaming, “More education!”, “More degrees”, “More certifications!”. But in the end, what does that mean? There isn’t a degree that specializes in bringing unknown political figures to world superpowers. There isn’t a certification that guarantees successful product launches. More education is more preparation, more delay to actually achieving goals and changing our world. (emphasis on our because most people want to change the entire world. They want to change their own world, being their friends and family. Making the lives of those around them better)

So what do I want to see in the people I interview? Motivation. We need people that are motivated to teach themselves the tools needed to succeed. To lead those around them because we all need it. To tie themselves to their work and translate their job into something that they do. It’s not your job. It’s your life. 1/3 of your life to sleep. Nearly 1/4 of your life goes into “work”. Your work is you. Why aren’t you motivated to live your life?

New start ups don’t have the capital to hand out for high end talent. For entrepreneurs, we must take risks with the unproven team member who is an A player. Unfortunately, an A player is labeled with a bright red A on their forehead. Here’s what I look:

Start Up life continuing

How do I know that my business is progressing? I can tell that life has began to move faster, yet I wonder if I am moving faster towards a grand failure or grand success? Every day is a roller coaster. The good, the bad. The incredible and the horrible.

I find that my highs and lows are becoming more extreme but I think it’s mainly because my highs are getting better while the lows are staying around the same. So I guess things are improving here. I just wish that I could make less mistakes and operate perfectly every time. But failure is a part of life and especially doing a start up. But luckily success comes as well.

FML, life is awesome.

Relying on your People

In my life, I’ve learned that the one person I can always rely on is myself. This has served me well throughout college and in my personal life. This has even served me well in the beginnings of my business. I suddenly find myself reliant on those around me and my future in their hands. I’m uncomfortable with this and finding it unbelievably hard to deal with and accept. However, the more effort I to take things into my own hands, the more scattered everything gets and the business becomes less effective.

So I’m stuck with relying on those around me and I just have to learn that everything will be alright…hopefully.
